Eidolon Style

I was once given the sage advice to “fish like you would as if on your own” and that has evolved to become my charter fishing style over the years. Embodying the Eidolon’s namesake, my comfort zone is away from the fleet, slipping in and out of the fog, or stretching out to find fish in spaces alone and off the beaten path. I am laid back to a fault and truly motivated by the success of those I take fishing. I enjoy sharing new experiences with novices and veterans alike. The perpetual child within can be just as happy chasing Tuna as sight casting sea robins. I leave the dock with a plan but adapting to opportunity is where things come alive. A fly and light tackle angler at heart, I am a quiet, yet fiercely competitive introvert. I am the type that enjoys the water as an escape from the stresses of every day life as well as the reward from accomplished challenges.

Capt. Shaun Ruge

I grew up as a fly and light tackle trout and warm water angler from the Hudson Valley Catskills area of upstate New York before trading my 5wt for a 9wt and transitioning to salt in 2000. Started with a brief five year stint exploring the rips, rock piles, and sand bars in and around Boston Harbor, Rhode Island, North and South Shores, and Cape Cod while based out of Winthrop MA.

I served as mate and co-captain with Riptide Charters from 2003 to 2019 fishing the Cape and Islands inshore, offshore and everything in between from Scup and Squid to Tuna, Mahi, and Marlin.

I have contributed content, authored, or assisted with numerous fishing and boating TV, print, and digital media publications as well as engagements at some of the regions more popular seminar series, clubs, and retail venues. A marine electronics industry veteran and USCG Master, I have guided multiple Massachusetts state catch and release pin fish and currently reside in Centerville MA with my wife and two daughters.

Latitude Tournament Boats - LTB 25

25’ LOA, 180 gal fuel capacity, Suzuki Power, Garmin Electronics, Dometic Optimus steering & adaptive trim.

A hand-built cedar strip Crystal River 16 technical poling skiff designed by Smith Marine Design constructed in 2021 from plans by then novice and now far from master boat builder, yours truly.

The “Flatwing” is titled after a favorite fly pattern and offers a very stable, intimate platform capable of gliding through backwaters, salt marshes, and sand flats. It is equally suited to slink around backwaters under the cover of darkness or pole bright greasy bluebird days over shallow white sand.

At a stealthy fifteen foot two inches in length it can accommodate myself and two adult anglers or one adult and two children.

The Flatwing

The Flatwing is equipped with Garmin electronics including LiveScope sonar that can efficiently and accurately track individual fish within one hundred and twenty feet of the boat in any direction, a true force multiplier. While I prefer the timeless stealth of a 20’ Temple Fork push pole, a Garmin Force Kraken trolling motor and PowerPole micro aid with finer boat control.
